“I lied for a long time because society wasn’t ready to hear me. Throughout my career, I went through periods of depression. I am who I am because of those moments.
As a kid, I didn’t receive much love and affection. I had to be strong and tough. I didn’t know how to talk about problems or ask for help. The first time my father hugged me, he said, ‘This baby will be a great football player.’ From then on, I was programmed for success. My father took full control of my body. I was never happy when I scored goals.
I was always trying to please my teammates, the fans, and everyone because I grew up wanting to please him. During the pandemic, I couldn’t see my kids for a year. It was hard. I needed something like that to happen to understand my vulnerability. I cried almost every day for no reason. The tears would just come. It was young Thierry crying for everything he didn’t achieve.”
