🤔 Are the 19 Clans of Rwanda Still Important Today?
Among the positive traditional values of Rwandan culture, clan solidarity once stood at the very heart of society. Before colonial times, Rwandans belonged to 19 clans, known as "amoko" which were based on ancestors.
When the colonizers arrived, they reinterpreted these clans as rigid "social classes," creating the categories of Hutu, Tutsi, and Twa. Yet before their arrival, those distinctions were fluid, a person could move from one group to another depending on their life circumstances.
What truly mattered was the clan identity. Wherever a Muzigaba, Musinga, or Musindi went, they were warmly welcomed by members of their clan, regardless of their social status. Every clan had its own totem. And also, no widow or orphan was ever left behind, the clan took care of everyone.
Imagine if this spirit of unity and shared responsibility were restored today. Could reviving our clans help us care better for widows, orphans, and the vulnerable, and heal the divisions left by colonialism?
Rebuilding the sense of clan solidarity wouldn’t divide us; it could instead strengthen our togetherness as one people, Abanyarwanda, united by origin, love, and compassion ❤️🫶🇷🇼
