Many people are trapped in what they call love, not because it is still alive, but because they have been together for a long time.
Ada and Kunle met when life was simple and dreams were loud. In the beginning, everything felt right. They laughed easily, shared small plans, and promised forever without understanding what forever truly required. Years passed, and somewhere along the line, love stopped growing. It didn’t die suddenly it slowly lost direction.
They stayed together not because they were building something, but because leaving felt like wasting time already spent. “We’ve been together for too long to start again,” Ada would say. Kunle agreed, though deep inside he no longer knew where the relationship was heading. There were no conversations about the future, no shared vision, no clear commitment just routine.
They celebrated anniversaries that meant nothing and fixed arguments without fixing the real problem. Each time one of them felt unhappy, fear kept them quiet. Fear of loneliness. Fear of judgment. Fear of starting over. What they called love had quietly turned into a comfort zone made of memories.
One day, Ada watched a young couple passionately discuss their plans growth, purpose, direction. She felt a heavy ache in her chest. That was when she realized the truth: love without direction is a beautiful prison. It looks safe, but it keeps you stuck.
Kunle felt it too. He noticed how both of them had stopped becoming better versions of themselves. The relationship was no longer pushing them forward; it was holding them back. They were surviving together, not thriving together.
Eventually, they sat down for the hardest conversation of their lives. Not to fight, not to blame but to be honest. They admitted that staying together out of history was not the same as staying together out of purpose.
Walking away was painful, but staying would have been more damaging.
The lesson was clear:
Time spent together is not the same as progress made together. Love must have direction, growth, and purpose. Without these, it becomes a slow trap one where people confuse familiarity for destiny.
True love doesn’t just stay.
It leads somewhere.
